| | George Washington had a letter dictated to the army on August 3rd, 1776 that said,
"The General is sorry to be informed that the foolish, and wicked practice, of profane cursing and swearing (a vice heretofore little known in an American army) is growing into fashion; he hopes the officers will, by example, as well as influence, endeavor to check it, and that both they, and the men will reflect, that we can have little hopes of the blessing of heaven on our arms, if we insult it by our impiety and folly; added to this, it is a vice so mean and low, without any temptation, that every man of sense, and character, detests and despises it."
Jesus also speaks against cursing in the book of Matthew chapter five, beginning in the middle of verse 33 through 37.
"You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform your oaths to the Lord. But I say to you, do not swear at all: neither by heaven, for it is God's throne; nor by the earth, for it is His footstool; nor by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great king. Nor shall you swear by your head, because you cannot make one hair white or black. But let your 'Yes' be 'Yes,' and your 'No,' 'No.' For whatever is more then these is evil."
Back in the day, only the crude men swore, and even then, not in the presence of a lady. Now days, some "ladies" curse worse than men. I think it is sad how far our society has been degraded. Swearing is down right degrading, and those who are "good writers" should have no need for swearing and cursing, for such "can have little hopes of the blessings of heaven".
